11:15 AM - Keynote: Safety Insights from a Naval Aviation Perspective

Christian Buhlmann

Former ARPM Board President and US Navy Captain-Retired, Christian Buhlmann, will kick off the 2022 EHS Summit with safety insights from a naval aviation perspective. Built on the foundation of what he learned while serving in the US Navy, Buhlmann will share insights on what the manufacturing industry can do to further their own safety preparedness and exercise those plans to test your organizations readiness for any disasters that it may face. This keynote presentation will set the stage for the 2022 EHS Summit through a deep dive into why everyone is here - to keep your people alive and safe.

Moderator: Jon Medo, Federated Insurance

Panelists: Marel Riley-Ryman, Southern Michigan Rubber; Scott Titzer, Infinity Molding & Assembly; and Rick Walters, DeKalb Molded Plastics

No one expects a disaster will happen to their organization, and that is what makes them so devastating. They are unplanned, unexpected, and can be catastrophic to the organization and it's employees. To protect your organization, planning for disasters and disaster recovery is an essential practice, and during this panel attendees will hear stories from industry peers who have experienced disasters. Led by Jon Medo of Federated Insurance, the panelists will share what happened at their organization, what it impacted, and how their business practices have changed because of it.

Michelle Baker, Zeon Chemicals

In 2016, President Obama signed the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act into law. The updated law gave the US Environmental Protection Agency sweeping new authority to ensure that the tens of thousands pf chemicals in everyday products do not pose unreasonable risks to human health and the environment. This presentation will explain some of the new requirements and give practical advice to ensure compliance.

We are committed to the NSC’s Work to Zero initiative to end workplace fatalities by 2050 using technology. Ultimately, safety programs are developed to ensure every worker makes it home at the end of the day. 2:00 PM - Marketing Safety to Improve Your Safety Culture

David Thurwanger, Yaskawa America

The days of dusty safety policy binders and motivational posters are long past us—or at least they should be. To get to the next level of organizational safety, you need to develop a safety culture in which each employee is fully committed to the safety effort. In this session, you will learn several strategies and tactics to engage all your employees in the process of hazard identification, risk mitigation and safety improvement in formats that resonate with today's diverse workforce.

2:00 PM – Power Your KPIs with BI

Lori Carson, Zeon Chemicals

This May, I mark my 30th year as an Environmental Safety & Health professional. Much like my peers, spreadsheets were my loyal friend throughout the years. To be honest, I still use them (make new friends but keep the old, one is silver but the other is gold), but my new best friend is Microsoft Power BI. I am going to talk about my experience learning how to use it. More importantly, I want to tell you how it has positively impacted our safety programs and ultimately why it has made my job as Director of Safety Health & Environment a little easier. Power BI is very user friendly after you stop thinking of it as Excel. It is easy to visualize large sets of data and create professional reports that can be shared throughout my company. In my team, we now spend more time analyzing trends than manipulating data into charts. This analysis has transformed our KPIs that used to be one boring Report Card. Now we have dozens of charts to help us share insights and make data-driven decisions that drive strategic action. By removing the human manipulating the data, reports are more accurate and update in seconds.

3:00 PM - EHS Awards and Closing

The 2022 Safety Awards recognize companies in the manufacturing industry that have achieved excellent safety techniques that go beyond the average regulations. The awards will be given out based on OSHA 300's Log of work-Related Injuries and Illness statistics and Safety Best Practices.

3:15 – Adjourn Event

Patrick Nelson is the CEO of Loyalty Point Leadership. As he works with organizations throughout the country, he consistently sees the front-line employees who don't feel inspired by their work. As a result, employees often end up doing the bare minimum regarding safety and don't take full ownership of their tasks. Often, safety meetings are uninspiring and people are not engaged. One company Patrick worked for experienced a 57% decrease in incidence, which saved them money, but the biggest joy was when a manager told him, "you've saved lives here." The 'how' lies in using stories to connect with your frontline and help them draft their own personal safety mission statement for their job. After the meetings, they not only know how to work safer, they become advocates of a safer workplace. Patrick dropped out of college two days after 9/11 and joined the Army as a paratrooper. He served for nearly 7 years with 3 combat depoloyments and his military awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal. During one of his deployments, Patrick's failure as a leader led to one of his soldiers being killed in combat, while he was only peppered in the back from schrapnel. This life-changing expeirence set him on a path to help others not repeat his same mistake. Today his mission is to inspire others and influence the future. Patrick's expeirences have shaped how he lives and instantly connects with diverse audiences on topics ranging from leadership to overcoming adversity and effective communication. Today, Patrick helps leaders and their frontlines in Fortune 500 and other organizations radically decrease their on-the-job incidents. And in this calling, Patrick also helps you build a culture of safety ownership and an inspired workforce that distinguishes your company.

The result was Yaskawa America being named an EHS Today's America’s Safest Companies award in 2017, multiple risk management awards from Yaskawa's WC captive insurance company, workers compensation reductions of nearly 50% and a more engaged safety-mindset workforce.
